It is impossible not be impressed by modern-day architects when it comes time for home transformations and renovations.

In the twenty-first century, old-fashioned materials and designs have been made with a modern twist. Nowadays, it is possible to find spaces that are very cozy with a basic but rustic wooden corner cabinet.

Corner cabinets are all about making an old design look new and modern. As modern design has become popular, so too have these cabinets evolved in style as well. While there is still a lot of work that needs to be done, there are tons of resources on the internet if you want to know how to build one yourself. The following guide is designed to help you learn how you can make your own corner cabinet with simple steps, tricks, and how tos.

Cost:

Materials needed to build the corner cabinet:

-2x 3×8″ pine boards (makes 8″ finished cabinet height)
-1/2 sheet of 3/4 MDF board (makes 1.5″ finished cabinet height)
-1 1/2″ thick piece of glass that measures 32.5 x 32.
-Finished wood: to color your cabinet and make it look more finished

-Liquid nails adhesive
-Deck screws (1.5″ or 2″)

-Clamps that can hold wood together while you put in the screws (medium duty clamps)
-Stainable wood filler
-Sandpaper that can be used on the stained wood before sealing or painting with polyurethane. This will give your piece the best finish. You’ll want a fine grit sandpaper, not one with a rough texture.

Directions:

  • 1) Use the 2x3s to start building the sides and back of your cabinet. This can be done by attaching one side board to one of the back boards with a clamp. Then, start working your way through two more sides and another back board. You should have a group of four boards forming the frame for your cabinet (one side, two parts of a back, and another side). Clamp these boards together so that they hold together tightly while you work on them later on. Make sure that you apply some wood glue before screwing them in place with screws or liquid nails adhesive.
  • 2) You’ll want to work on the bottom of your cabinet next. Use the 1/2 sheet of MDF to create a flat surface that is 32.5 x 32.5. This is what will lay underneath your glass piece that you’ll be using as a countertop in the corner cabinet. Be sure to sand this area until it has a good, smooth surface and then stain it with whatever color you choose for your cabinet (or paint it depending on whether or not you use stainable wood filler for the inside). Let this dry completely before moving on to the next step, but do not apply polyurethane or other sealants just yet.
  • 3) Attach your glass countertop to the MDF using wood glue. Allow this to dry completely before using wood screws to attach it in place.
  • 4) Time to move onto the inside of your cabinet frame. Start by screwing the first board in place that you made in step 1. Clamp all four sides together and put some wood glue all around each of your boards so that they stay firmly in place while you work on them. Once all four sides are attached, start working on attaching another back panel as well as a bottom panel like you did with the MDF (steps 2 and 3).
  • 5) Now that you’ve got the inside of your cabinet complete, you’ll want to start on the outside. To do this, take one of your side boards and attach it to one of the sides of your frame with a clamp. Use wood glue and screws to build your frame up. Repeat this same process two more times so that you have four side boards attached in a row (one is hanging off from each corner). Once you have done this step, put some wood glue around all four corners of your frame for added strength.
  • 6) Your frame should now be complete after doing steps 4 and 5. You should have a large wooden frame that is shaped like an “L.” Now you can focus on creating the back of the cabinet. You’ll want to do this by using the 2x3s and attaching them in place using wood glue and screws. Be sure to clamp all parts together so that your corners are nice and sturdy when finished.
  • 7) Once the back is attached to your frame, it’s time to think about installing the doors of your corner cabinet. You’ll first want to cut out a rough opening for each door so that they have room to open up and close easily.
  • The doors should be roughly 8″ high. Again, use wood glue and screws to attach the doors to the frame of your cabinet. Remember that you’ll want to put some wood glue on each of the boards that you’re using for the door before attaching them so that your doors are sturdy and secure.
  • 8) If you decided that you’d like to paint your piece, then now is the time to do so. This can be done with a good primer before applying a coat of paint and possibly polyurethane as well. If you are going for polyurethane, then only apply it in one coat as it will prevent chipping later on after years of use.

Q: What Should I Use for Rustic Corner Cabinets?

A: For some people, they’ll use pine boards for their cabinet because it is sturdy and will last a long time. It’s important to be careful if you’re going to use pine boards though as they are flimsy and easy to crack.

Q: Where Can I Find Corner Cabinets?

A: This is a good question as it’s important that you don’t buy one that you don’t know where it is from. It can be hard to find corner cabinets online because they aren’t always proven sellers or manufacturers, but there are some places where you can shop around for them. Some of the places you might want to look at include Amazon, Etsy and Houzz.

Q: What Do I Need to Build Corner Cabinets?

A: The first thing you’ll need is a good idea of what you want. This can be achieved by measuring the space you have available, taking into consideration the width and height of your space as well as the amount of room in your cabinets. This is important to have because a lot of angles need to be taken into consideration with the design of the cabinets.

For those that don’t know, there are two different types of corner cabinets that you can build for your home: the raised corner cabinet or the lowered corner cabinet. The difference is that one has a higher-back and puts more attention on the top while the other has a lower-back and makes more room in front. Either one can certainly add an interesting element to your home’s decor so long as you take care not to prioritize going too cheap with it.

Detailed Instructions:

  • Step 1: Use a level to ensure that the surface of the corner cabinet is even.
  • Step 2: Pick out which pieces of lumber you’ll need to build your cabinet. The first thing you’ll want to do is pick out your frame for your cabinet and make sure that it’s sturdy and at the same height as your cabinets. Measure your sliding glass door and make sure it fits nicely in place with whatever vertical space you have remaining in your cabinets.
  • Step 3: Use a square to ensure that everything is perfectly lined up on the frame. Use wood glue and 4-inch wood screws to attach this frame piece on all four corners of your sliding glass door including top, sides, bottom, and back (trouble spots).
  • Step 4: Now, measure the width of your sliding glass door and make sure it’s cut to size. Once that’s done you can then take a square and place it on one side of your cabinet. Make sure to place it on the right side of your back piece. Step 5: In case you didn’t know, the right side is typically the thicker side on a cabinet. Place another square on this frame piece so that they reach all the way across one another. Then, use a pencil to mark where they intersect so that you line up perfectly with each other. Step 6: Next, use wood glue and wood screws to attach your vertical support pieces in place from top to bottom at both sides of each corner.
  • Step 7: To do this, measure the distance between each of your index finger and thumb together. Then, make sure that you line up and place a wood screw in each end of this distance so that they reach all the way across the length of your cabinet. Step 8: Now it’s time to attach the horizontal support pieces to your cabinet frame. Lay out your piece of lumber on top of the frame so that it fits nicely in place. You’ll want to line up and place a wood screw at each corner of your piece so that it’s secure in place.

Q: Why Do People Build Corner Cabinets?

A: There are a few reasons why people build corner cabinets. For some, it’s because they’ve always wanted to do so and never had the time or resources to go out and buy one. There are also some individuals that don’t like the space that their cabinet takes up because it means they have to sacrifice other areas in the home. This can very well be a space saving idea that could even lead to you saving money on your utility bills as well as storage space in your house.

Q: When Should I Make My Corner Cabinets?

A: There are a lot of ways to build your corner cabinet. You can either purchase them already built, work with a local woodworker, or simply make your own.
