Stylish tricks on how to upgrade natural pine bedroom furniture.

This post will bring you through different ways to upgrade your natural pine furniture, from adding a stylish headboard to find the perfect rug for that one corner of the room you’ve been thinking about for some time now.

The tricks and tips are not only fun but easy and fast! We hope this article can be a handy guide in finding creative solutions to problems we all have with their bedside tables or nightstands, tv consoles or dressers. Not just the standard black-brown-gold colors that are so popular these days.

We’ve compiled a list of inexpensive ways to update your furniture and get that completely new look for your bedside tables, nightstands, tv consoles, dressing/wardrobes, your sofa and even the way you can change your wall colors (we know many people like to have a certain color theme)…

As always, if you have any recommendations or other tricks you would like to share with us in the comments section below this post please feel free to do so.

1. Add a stylish headboard.
It’s a classic trick, and we all know it – that headboard should be the centerpiece of the entire design. This gives your bed a more stylish look, since the side tables will be in your line of vision throughout the whole night. It’s creative… it’s different and it can even help to make small bedrooms look bigger!

Materials:

1) Pine wood (round/square) – size depending on where you want to place your headboard. We recommend 2×2 sizes if you want to hang it straight into the wall (this is not always reliable if you want something stylish or want to attach additional objects at a specific height).
We suggest you get pine and avoid MDF (no matter what they might tell you, or even show you in their shops… Don’t fall for it. The core is not wood, it’s like a sponge, it will warp over time. You’ll only tell yourself “Why didn’t I listen…?”)

2) Doweling wood – size depending on your project. Get the thicker dowels, they will be much more resistant than the thinner ones. Pine is not that heavy, so 3/8″ but preferably 1/2″ will work just fine if you want to make sure your headboard doesn’t fall apart after a couple of years.

3) Wood glue

4) Sandpaper (fine)

5) Stain or paint and brush/roller. (We suggest stain in natural colors, with a hint of color. The darker the color, the bigger it will look, so we suggest you pick a lighter one, since you’re probably not trying to oversize your bed.)

6) Drill and drill bits (to make those rivets in the hole where the dowels are going to fit into). You can use a screwdriver but it won’t be as smooth as when using this type of drill bit.

7) Nails (to hang it from the wall) – We recommend galvanized nails.

8 ) Washers (They hold the nails against the wall and reduce friction, so if you don’t get enough of them you will feel a lot of pressure against your nail when you put it in.)

9) Paper or cloth to cover your headboard. The purpose of this is to protect your headboard from dust and dirt. You can use furniture pads or simply a piece of paper that you can tape in place with painters tape or masking tape.

2. Add a stylish rug.

Materials:
Natural pine wood (quilt or round) – size depending on the spot you want to place your rug. You can also stain it to match your headboard and wall colors. This will help you create one whole design that ties your bedroom together. Keep in mind that pine acts as a sponge… Get something non-slippery, preferably a little coarse, since you can’t put any kind of chemicals on it later, otherwise it will start breaking down and fall apart over time. That won’t happen right away but if you don’t take care of it after some time you will start having issues with pine furniture breaking down and falling apart.

Q: How to Make Natural Pine Bedroom Furniture?

A: When you want to make a bed frame, use only 2×2 timber. The fittings are different. For example, in the headboard there is a slot (1/2″) where you slide the dowel and then the headboard can be attached with wood glue. The dowel goes through a hole and has to be very close to the wall behind.

Another tip: when building furniture out of pine, use SANDERS SANDING PAPER for shaping it. Wooden furniture is usually painted after sanding, like for example with chalk paint or shellac oil paint.

Detailed Instructions:

  • Step 1: Use a drill to make holes where the dowels will fit into. Make sure they have enough room to move and fit perfectly.
  • Step 2: Glue only the edge of the headboard (the outer side) to the wall. This is not necessary but it helps you fixate it in place and make it much more sturdy (especially if you want to add an additional element such as a mirror or a photo frame).
  • Step 3: Place your rug on the floor in its final place and check that everything is in order and how you want it before putting glue on the top of your headboard or other elements. And glue it down for good.
  • Step 4: If you want to add a headboard on either side, place the dowels in each of them and wait for them to cure (some time). Then they can be glued down.
  • Step 5: Put the headboard against the wall and let it dry. Wait some time before putting the rest of your furniture on it.
  • Step 6: Check your furniture every day, especially if you have a dog or a kid, to see if there is any movement – sanding or breaking down.
  • Step 7: When the furniture is properly dry and not moving, you can apply paint or stain.
  • Step 8: Add your accessories, such as a lamp and a mirror to make your bed even more stylish.
  • Step 9: The last thing you should do is to add some sort of a protective layer. This can be a sealer or varnish to protect the wood from breaking down and breaking off. It will also prevent it from absorbing moisture which will make it expand and break off with time.

Q: How Many Headboards Can You Make From 1 4×8 Sheet of Plywood?

A: You can make approximately three queen size headboards from 1 sheet of plywood. If you want to cut them into 4 pieces it’s more economical, because the fourth one is usually too small to be sold in stores.

You can make all the sizes you like and then put your own headboard on your bed frame. If you don’t want to drill holes into it, consider just making a headboard for the wall (or for your bed frame) and then add other elements later, such as a mirror or decor.

Q: How Much Does Plywood Weight?

A: A 4×8′ sheet of plywood weighs approximately 150 pounds.

Q: How to Stop Screws From Drilling Through Plywood?

A: If you are dealing with plywood, you can stop that from happening by using PLYWOOD SCREW STOPPERS. They will save your life and prevent the screws from going through the plywood and damaging whatever is on the other side. They come in long lengths (24″) but they are easy to cut down with a hacksaw if you only need a few of them. These are very handy when working with panels and bigger sheets of wood.

Q: How Long Does It Take To Dry Natural Pine Plywood?

A. Pine lumber is a very common material, it’s durable and rich in several types of characteristics that make it a very good material for all kinds of furniture-making. Pinewood, commonly known as wood’s name, doesn’t have to be shipped from the mill to your store. So don’t think about it before you buy this material – just buy it and start building immediately. The sun will take its time to dry it and in the end there will be no problem with the furniture not being strong enough to support the weight of your body or a child that’s too small to climb up on a bed frame.

Q: What Size Does Plywood Come In?

A: Plywood comes in many different sizes. The most common sizes are 4×8, 4×4 and 3×3. When we want to make a headboard, we will use the 3×3 sheets because they fit beautifully on a queen size bed frame and they are very easy to work with. Now if you need to make something bigger, then use the 4’x4′ plywood sheets.

Q: What Is The Difference Between Particle Board And Plywood?

A: Particleboard is basically an engineered wood product that comes from dry sawdust collected from hardwoods/softwoods. It is manufactured with engineered glue and/or binders. Then these are pressed together and distributed in a suitable size according to the manufacturer’s specifications. This product is lightweight, very strong, durable, readily available and widely used for many applications. Its drawbacks are its heavyweight which makes it unsuitable for some purposes, its high cost which makes it expensive to buy and its difficulty to work with compared to plywood (which is more porous, lighter in weight and less easily damaged).

Q: What Is The Difference Between Plywood And MDF?

A: Plywood is composed of large pieces of wood – dense boards bonded together by countless layers of glue. They have a smooth or sanded surface, are uniform in thickness and come in many sizes. MDF (Medium Density Fiberboard) is a relatively new material that is recently made by compressing sawdust and other wood scraps which are the result of various kinds of sawing processes. It is comparatively inexpensive, with denser fiber content than particle board or plywood. It has no grain, making it ideal for painting because there is no risk of paint seeping into the wood fibers and causing discoloration or cracking. It is easy to sand and stain, but not nearly as durable as solid wood.

Q: When Do I Need To Use Plywood Vs. MDF?

A: The biggest difference between these two types of materials is that plywood is quite expensive and hard to work with, while MDF is light and easily movable. A good example of using plywood at home would be making a headboard while using MDF would be making tabletops or other projects that do not need to withstand heavy amounts of weight.

Q: What Is The Difference Between Corian And Plywood?

A: Corian and the more traditional wood are both composite products that are made from layers of synthetic resin which give them the feel, color and texture of natural wood but there are many differences between the two.

Q: Where Can I Use Plywood?

A: Plywood can be used almost anywhere wood has been traditionally used. It’s ideal for furniture, cabinets, case goods, furniture panels and even flooring. For example – headboards are usually made out of plywood but they can be covered with other materials if you don’t have time to make them properly. Although it is not traditional, this type of headboard can still look good on your bed.

Q: What Is The Relation Between Plywood And Paint?

A: You should only buy plywood that comes from a reputable company/factory or you won’t get the best result afterwards.

Q: Why Does Plywood Increase Weight?

A: Plywood is made from very thin pieces of wood that are joined together with glue and sometimes a little bit of resin. Being sheets of wood, they are very heavy and adding extra weight to your project would definitely affect the final result. Also, plywood is more prone to developing cracks than solid wood so it also decreases the longevity of your furniture.

Q: Who Makes Plywood?

A: Plywood is made by a company called the 3M Company which is an American company that manufactures the synthetic resin layers of which plywood is made of. They are known for producing high-end products such as acoustic ceiling tiles and special material that’s used for making cleaning solutions.

Q: Why Is Plywood Called Particleboard?

A: Particleboard (also known as engineered wood) is a man-made material that is very similar to plywood but it has a different composition. It’s more affordable and lighter in weight than birch plywood. It is also less strong, less durable and doesn’t have the aesthetic features that plywood has. However, particleboard doesn’t shrink or swell when wet so it can be used for outdoor projects if you cover the top portion with exterior grade paint and shellac.
