Mahogany decking, also known as Swietenia Mahogani, Mahogany Swieteni and Juan de Nova mahogany, is a species of the genus Swietenia native to the forests of Central America. In its natural habitat it grows in lowland tropical rainforests at 1-6 meters tall on large trees like Tabebuia (Brazilian pepper) for support. During life, it is a slow-growing tree with a short trunk and broad spreading crown that typically matures to be over 20 feet in height.

The common name mahogany is often used to describe tropical hardwood species in general in North America, including those of the genus Swietenia. In the United States and some other English-speaking countries, “swietenia” is a synonym for these hardwoods. For example, the American Wood Council recommends that American woodworkers follow the British practice of referring to all tropical hardwoods as “swietenia.” Many other English-speaking countries have different native names for these species; e.g., mahogany (in Australia), melaleuca (in New Zealand) and ceiba (in Venezuela).

The timber of Swietenia mahagoni is a valuable hardwood, used extensively in construction in the United States and being increasingly used elsewhere. The density and weight of this wood make it ideal for use as decking, while its durability and resistance to rot makes it a good choice for outdoor furniture. It has traditionally been regarded as one of the most expensive woods available.

Swietenia mahagoni is widely sold under the names mahogany or West Indian mahogany, although it is not related to either true African or Asian mahoganies (Melanoxylon spp.).

Large logs were formerly made into masts, boat hulls and wheel spokes. Mahogany is also used for gunstocks and fine furniture, cabinets, veneers, musical instruments (particularly acoustic guitars), small precision turned objects and other specialty uses. At one time, it was a major export from the West Indies. The leading importer of mahogany today is the United States.

Mahogany has been used as an ornamental tree in gardens throughout tropical regions worldwide and naturalized in some areas in the tropics.

Trees grow from seeds that are usually a few millimeters long, in diameter, and flat. Seeds also were used as amulets against jaguars and as a cure for fever. The wood is used for bowls, boxes, trays, furniture and cabinets (mahogany), guitar fretboards (Swietenia mahagoni), piano keys (Swietenia macrophylla), inlaid putty or other decorative items. As with many tropical hardwoods it is an attractive species suitable for bonsai cultivation which can be grown under the right conditions.

Q: How to Make Mahogany Decking?

A: Mahogany decking should be laid above ground from joist work into the supporting posts. This should be a minimum of 100mmx100mm and must be used throughout. All posts should be properly anchored to the brickwork, concrete or timber foundation via concrete blocks and dowels. Once installed there is no maintenance required on mahogany decking, although it is always advised that you apply a high quality penetrating sealer before use. This will protect against staining and also ensure you do not get unnecessary mould or mildew growth over time.

Detailed Instructions:

  • Step 1: Find the right locationJust like any other type of decking, you’ll need an area with a level surface and definitely no obstacles nearby such as trees and other decking. It is best if the area is exposed to sunlight most of the day and situate it away from walls and buildings so that rainwater can properly drain into the soil.
  • Step 2: Prepare the ground, level it out
Put down a layer of at least 15mm of gravel, this will prevent your new deck from sinking and also reduce any sound vibrations when walking on it. Make sure there are no depressions or holes in this layer before pouring the concrete. Level out with a line or spirit level.
  • Step 3: Prep the area
If your deck is being laid on concrete, you’ll need to cover this with a layer of water proof weed matting. If your deck is being laid on top of a wooden floor, it will be necessary to damp-proof the wooden area and apply a high quality primer to increase its durability.
  • Step 4: Lay the first row of posts
Lay out the 1st row of posts at least 100mm apart. Make sure each post is firmly embedded into concrete or has been anchored into a brickwork or timber foundation with concrete blocks and dowels.
  • Step 5: Drill holes with a spade bit (if using concrete)
Use a spade bit to drill holes through the posts at least 100mm apart. Make sure the holes are level and no more than 100mm deep. Fill the hole with concrete and then sand it smooth.
  • Step 6: Lay decking into posts
Lay your decking into each post, filling them up to fit. Make sure it fits tightly between the posts before finishing off by nailing the board to prevent expansion or shrinkage over time. Area should be covered underneath with plastic sheeting and topped up with gravel or sand layer before covering in weed matting if you are laying on top of concrete.

Q: How to Maintain Mahogany Decking?

A: In order to maintain your new mahogany decking there are a number of simple steps to follow. First of all, you should always seek the advice of your local decking manufacturer so that they can advise you on how to keep your mahogany clean and free from any potential decaying. The hot sun can cause the colour to fade and there are a number of stain-repellent sprays which you can purchase from a hardware store or timber specialist. In order to maintain your mahogany decking, it is also important that you make sure that it is not left in direct sunlight for long periods. Over time, the wood will begin to dull down and could become damaged if left exposed to too much UV light.

Q: How Many Board Feet of Mahogany Decking Do I Need for My Project?

A: This really depends on the size of your project, but usually one board foot per 4 square feet will be enough. With a typical deck measuring 12’x16′, you would need about 36 board feet to cover it. If you are using the wood for furniture or construction, you’ll need more than this, so make sure to check with the manufacturer so that you can purchase the right amount.

Q: How Much Mahogany Decking is Enough Mahogany Decking for My Project?

A: This really depends on the amount of decking that you need. The more energy efficient the project, the less mahogany decking that you will need. The same applies if you are looking to use it for furniture or any other form of construction rather than just decking alone. Also, if your project is large or will be left in direct sunlight for long periods of time, then you may need to purchase a larger quantity so that there is enough to last the whole life of your project.

Q: How Long Does Mahogany Decking Last?

A: The most important factor in how long you will get out of your new mahogany decking is its maintenance. If you do not maintain it properly, it will begin to rot, or even foul from mold and mildew. Keeping the wood clean and free from any grime will keep both you and your wooden porch or deck looking great for a lot longer. As with any other wooden product, keeping the wood free of water is also key to preserving it for as long as possible.

Q: What is the Amount of Mahogany Wood in a Single Board?

A: A single mahogany board is made from one block of wood, so if you are looking to buy a piece for use in furniture or construction purposes then you’ll want to make sure that it is as large as possible. The longer the board, the more mahogany wood that you will have to work with and this will reduce the amount of joints needed.

Q: What’s Mahogany?

A: Mahogany is one of the most sought after woods due to its durability and quality. It can be used for everything from decks and stairs, to furniture and carving projects as well.

Q: Where Can I Get Mahogany Wood?

A: You can easily find local mahogany wood suppliers in most large cities. There are also plenty of sources online which you can purchase from, but you will need to make sure that the wood is properly graded for its quality.

Q: How Do I Maintain Mahogany Wood?

A: The best way to keep your mahogany wood looking as good as new is by keeping it clean and free from any grime or damage. If possible, only use your decking outdoors and in locations where there is plenty of natural light. This will help protect it from getting dirty while allowed to dry naturally.

Q: Can You Re-Stain Mahogany Wood?

A: Yes, you will be able to re-stain your mahogany wood and make it look good as new. Using a water based stain can help keep the wood looking natural while only applying the colour that you need to make it look vibrant once again. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions when using any type of stain or finish.

Q: Can You Re-Finish Mahogany Wood?

A: Yes, you will be able to re-finish your wooden decking if it become damaged or begins to expand or contract from moisture in the air.

Q: Does Mahogany Wood Warp?

A: Yes, mahogany wood does warp due to changes in the temperature and moisture in the air. This can make it look a little uneven or not as smooth as it was when first purchased. You can fix this by staining your mahogany wood with a matching stain, or to see if this breaks the pattern of expansion and contraction you can sand it down and re-stain.

Q: How Do I Stain Mahogany Wood?

A: Applying a water based stain is essential to helping keep your mahogany wood looking brand new. Apply your stain via a brush after sanding down any rough patches.

Q: Which is Better Mahogany Wood or Oak Wood?

A: There really is no contest here, if you are looking for a natural alternative to oak, then mahogany is perfect. It has the same colour, texture and durability to it, so you will be able to get something that looks just as good.

Q: How Can I Maintain My Mahogany Wood Boarding?

A: A quick way to keep your mahogany wood boarding looking as good as new is by keeping it clean and free from any grime. If possible, only use your decking outdoors and in locations where there is plenty of natural light.

Q: Will Water Stain Mahogany Wood?

A: Yes, one of the big concerns that people have with mahogany wood is that it will stain easily if it comes into contact with water. It can be hard to avoid this as if you do use your deck for dining or for sitting outside for long periods of time, there is a chance some moisture could be sitting on the surface.

Q: What Can I Use to Stain Mahogany Wood?

A: The best way to stain your mahogany wood is by using a water based stain. This will help keep the wood looking as natural as possible while only adding the colour that you need to make it look vibrant once again.

Q: Why Do Mahogany Wood Boards Expand and Contract?

A: When the weather changes and there is a lot of moisture in the air, your mahogany wood may begin to expand. This can cause your deck boards to become uneven and may make it look rough on the surface. This problem can be solved by sanding down any ridge or bumps that appear on your board and then re-staining it. Another way to fix this is to keep it out of direct sunlight where it will not get as hot or dry out from moisture in the air. As long as you do not expose it to a lot of heat or water, you will be able to keep this issue from happening again.

Q: When Is Mahogany Wood Easy to Work With?

A: The best time to work with your mahogany wood is when it is in the morning or the evening. This is because when the sun rises and sets, your mahogany wood will expand and contract much more than throughout the day.

Q: Can you Stain Mahogany Wood?

A: Yes, you can stain mahogany wood if it becomes scratched or damaged because of a natural element such as water or sunlight exposure. A water based stain can help keep it looking great while only adding the colour that you need to make it vibrant once again.

Q: Who Invented Mahogany Wood?

A: Mahogany wood was first discovered in the 1600s and was actually used to make ships. It became very popular as it was strong, durable and beautiful. There is still a active mahogany wood ship industry today.

Q: How Can I Maintain My Mahogany Wood Balcony?

A: If you don’t want your mahogany wooden balcony to get damaged from the heat or cold, you should make sure that you keep it clean and free from any dirt or grime. This will allow the moisture in the air to work with the wood naturally, making it appear smooth and even once again.
