Home Improvement: A Costly, But Necessary Part of Life As a homeowner, [though you probably already know this,] one of the most important things you will do is work to maintain and improve your house. Most people are aware that home improvement is a necessity in life since these improvements add value to your property. Though most homeowners don’t have an unlimited budget for home improvement, they can’t afford not to spend money on necessary projects like replacing the roof and keeping their heating system up-to-date.
The unfortunate thing about home improvement is that it can be costly and requires an investment of both time and money. The good news is there are some projects you can do yourself. However, if you don’t have the skills or the patience to learn, hire a professional.
A few projects you might want to consider are:
Repairing or Replacing Your Roof – No matter what time of year it is, your roof should be in top shape. Depending on the roofing material used, repairing or replacing your roof could cost you $5,000-$10,000.

Q: How to Make Murphy Home?
A: You can make your own “Murphy” Home by DIY! Here are 3 step by step home improvement projects you can do:
1. Basement Remodeling
Tomatocats, a blog published by Murphy’s, has a great article on basement remodeling for beginner DIY-ers. Here are two images from the article:
2. Ceramic Tile Wall And Floor Tiles (Image Source: tomato cans)
3. Painting The Walls (Image Source: tomato cans)
Detailed Instructions:
- Step 1: We will start by removing the old floor tiles with a tile chisel. This will create an easier and better surface to work on.
- Step 2: Next you’ll need to remove the plaster ceiling with a chisel if it is damaged. It may help if you use rubber gloves so your hands don’t get damaged. If that’s not possible, then you can put your hand over something to protect your skin from the shard of broken plaster falling onto you. Keep in mind that there’s still some glass left underneath which could hurt you if it broke off.
- Step 3: Now it’s time to remove the old tiles and cracks in the walls. You can use a hammer to break off the tiles, but a power drill is best if you have one.
- Step 4: Once the old tiles are gone, you’ll need to remove the remaining plaster from your ceiling by using a chisel or hammer. You may be able to remove it with your hands, but if not use rubber gloves as there still could be broken glass under your hand which could cut you.
- Step 5: Covering up any exposed ceiling joists (they can damage your new tiles by absorbing moisture) with 2″ plastic sheeting or drop cloths will help prevent any water damage and mold growth.
- Step 6: Now it’s time to remove the old floor tiles. You can use a chisel to break up the old ones, or you can use an electric sander for smoother results. Either way, rubber gloves are a good idea as there still may be some plaster dust left under your nails.
- Step 7: Next you’ll need to remove any damaged or missing tiles from the walls and the subfloor on which they’re mounted with a tile cutter. Make sure any tiles that make contact with your foundation are removed.
- Step 8: If you only have one side of your room to work on, then you don’t need to do anything as it will already be drywalled and ready for new flooring.
- Step 9: If you have both walls to work on, then you’ll need to use drywall tape and drywall mud to fill in the exposed holes. Make sure to smooth over the surface so no one can tell there was any damage or missing tiles.
- Step 10: Next you’ll need to cut a piece of 1/4″ plywood (or another solid piece of wood) the same size as your subfloor and put it down over your old flooring. You’ll need this board so that you can secure your new flooring properly.
- Step 11: Cut out pieces of tile with a tile saw, making them large enough to fit over your subfloor and plywood without overlapping onto the walls.
